Motivational Business Speaker - it sounds like a great career. You get paid to travel the country, speaking at seminars, schools and conferences. But, the cut-throat world of business speaking is harder than it looks.

To get a better understanding of what it takes to train for and really succeed at becoming a motivational business speaker, keep reading.

History of Motivational Speaking

A motivational business speaker is, in a lot of ways, a lot of like a pastor or priest. His or her purpose is to indoctrinate listeners with a new mindset, engage them in the word and eventually, hopefully, inspire them.

Today, public speaking isn’t just the realm of politicians and priests - motivational speakers are helping sales teams work better,
inspiring people to reach their goals and assisting businesses motivate their work force.

Work Opportunities for Motivational Speakers

A motivational business speaker shouldn’t feel tied down to conference or business opportunities. In fact, a skilled speaker can find work speaking or hosting workshops at:
  • Adult or continuing education classes
  • Conventions and conferences
  • Colleges
  • Corporate training workshops or conferences
  • Cruises or themed events
  • Business association meetings/breakfasts/lunches
  • Non-profits and AGMs
  • Government groups
  • Seminar hosting companies
  • Trade shows
Training to Become a Motivational Speaker

Most motivation speakers do not have any formal training in public speaking, however if you’re not a strong public speaker - you may want to consider honing your public speaking skills before launching your career.

Look in your area for a Toastmaster’s Club. These clubs host regular get-togethers where people practice their public speaking skills. It’s a great way to get over your fears, practice speaking in public and get tips and advice from fellow speakers. You can search for local clubs on the Toastmasters International homepage at http://toastmasters.org.

In addition, most successful motivational business speakers have some form of business experience that they can fall back on or use to support their credentials as an expertise. Without any business or sales experience, your listeners may wonder why they’re even bothering to listen to you in the first place.

Finally, motivational business speakers must be good marketers - capable of building their own brand name and identity as a speaker worth hiring.

Tapping the Motivational Business Speaking Market

It can be extremely difficult to launch yourself as a motivational business speaker - whether it’s getting hired by a seminar company or trying to launch your own seminar program (online or on CD), you have to be both a skilled speaker and a skilled self-marketer. You must first present yourself as an expert and then build your name as if you were launching a new brand.

The most successful motivational business speaker is one who can not only sell a crowd, but also sell themselves.
